Netbooks may undergo the biggest change [03/08 09:34PM]

Laptop users tote them no farther than from one room to another, not really minding their heft or short battery life.

But many users -- college students among them -- still need laptops that survive away from desks and power outlets. Neither heavy "desktop replacements" nor ultralight netbooks with tiny screens and cramped keyboards work in that scenario.

With a matte-black keyboard, a silver rim, and a subtle honeycomb pattern, the NV5214u keeps in step with current laptop design. Our model came in coffee brown, but cherry red, nightsky black, and midnight blue options are also available.

Stores on the coast are getting prepared, stocking everything from bottled water to the latest gadgets that will help residents get their home and office computers backed up and their families safely evacuated.

New GPS systems and cell-phone applications give real-time traffic reports to show routes around the evacuation traffic jams. The stores also have safer generators, adapters to power electronics and even Toshiba PA3399U-1BRS battery-operated blenders for those who intend to keep their tradition of hurricane parties.

BattCursor has multiple ways of helping you keep track of your Sony laptop batteries life. The method for which it was named is, as seen here, turning the cursor into a floating battery meter. As you run low the cursor gives both the percentage and a visual indicator.

To celebrate the name change, RadioShack will conduct a "Shack Summer Netogether," a live event featuring two 17-foot laptop computers in New York and San Francisco. Equipped with Webcams, the gargantuan notebooks Dell Inspiron 6400 Battery  will allow live video and audio exchanges between the two cities.

This MacBook Pro comes with the same 5400-rpm, 320GB hard-disk drive as the previous one, though you can customize it with a faster (7200-rpm) 320GB HDD for US$50, or opt for either a 128GB ($300) or a 256GB (US$750) solid-state drive. The new laptop comes standard with 4GB of RAM, as did its predecessor (you can upgrade to 8GB of RAM for US$1000 more), but the memory is now DDR3 at 1066MHz instead of DDR2 at 667MHz. The system's Intel Core 2 Duo processor steps up from 2.5GHz in the previous generation to 2.66GHz, 17-inch PowerBook G4 battery, though with the same 6MB of L2 cache; for an additional $300, you can upgrade to a speedier 2.93GHz processor. The new 17-inch MacBook Pro has a 1066MHz front side bus, too, versus its predecessor's 800MHz front side bus.

Netbooks may undergo the biggest change. Models that appear after Windows 7 ships in October will see the most significant overhaul internally since the Netbook Dell Latitude D620 battery category debuted back in the spring of 2008. Intel's new "Pine Trail" Atom silicon will collapse most of the core chips onto one piece of silicon, improving the power efficiency and boosting performance.
